Eleanor Roosevelt was a first lady who passionately advocated for women’s equal rights, which is the focus of my essay. Her tireless activism and commitment to empowering women, who were not given the same rights as White men, served to inspire many during the 1920’s and for decades beyond. Her words, works, and wisdom, then and now, still serve to encourage women and other marginalized groups to persevere beyond societal limitations and constraints imposed by our institutions and society. Because it is in the aspiration to "do the thing [we] think we cannot do," that we will manifest feats beyond our imagination. The strength and perseverance of Eleanor Roosevelt makes her, long after her death in 1962, one of the most important and respected women of the 20th century.
