2. Religions in history began as mostly shamanic.
Shamans, who were not necessarily related to clan
elders in Pre-history and in the Paleolithic Era, were
often leaders of sun, moon, seasonal, or animalistic
ways of spiritual belief (paganism). A shaman could also
be a medicine worker or healer. Tribal leadership
shifted toward religious leadership, once larger
societies began to emerge. The earliest civilizations
developed power/wealth hierarchies in societies that
saw agricultural workers on the bottom, with clan
leaders now becoming part of religion, to justify their
leadership to the people. Pharoahs started to claim to
be gods themselves, for example. Hierarchies changed,
however. Military leaders, who could defend a city-
