with the identification of skin stem cells, it has become possible to add the normal copy of a mutated gene into skin stem cells in vitro, grow the skin, and then transplant onto the patient. this approach was used to successfully treat a patient with a different form of epidermolysis bullosa known as junctional epidermolysis bullosa.
