In his book Understanding the Atlantic Plantation Complex, Gareth McGuire writes “Clearly, Western Europeans (traders, planters, governments) dominated the Atlantic plantation complex. We know this because European traders, backed by their governments, raided for slaves in Africa and forced Africans to sell other Africans into perpetual servitude. Next, on the voyage to the Americas, European slave traders cowed slaves into submission. Finally, on the plantations, European planters constructed a system of coercion that allowed planters to exploit slaves’ labour by entirely controlling the lives slaves led.” Citing specific historical evidence, explain why or why not you would recommend to a History Department that McGuire be hired to teach a course on the Atlantic plantation system.
