This week of class we explore Intellectual Property in Chapter 9 and International Trade in Chapter 10 of the textbook. Respond to the following questions:
1. Intellectual property can be one of the most valuable assets of a business. What protection is available to a business under US law for various types of intellectual property? How can a business protect intellectual property worldwide?
2. If you currently work for a business, what type of intellectual property is owned by that business. If you don't currently work, please include information for a business you are familiar with from a family member, friend or where you have worked in the past.
3. China is a signatory country to the Madrid Protocol on the international registration of trademarks. Starbucks opened its first cafe´ in China in 1999 and has added outlets in numerous locations including Shanghai and at the Great Wall and the imperial palace in Beijing. Xingbake Cafe´ Corp. has imitated the designs of Starbucks cafe´s in its business coffee cafe´ locations in Shanghai. Xing (pronounced "Shing") means star, and bake, or "bak kuh" is pronounced like "bucks." Does the Seatle, Washington , Starbucks Corporation have standing to bring suit in China against Xingbake Cafe´Corp. Ltd? If so, on what theory? (Twomey, Jennings, Greene, 2017).
