Read the excerpt from "On the Mountain."
Half an hour later, she knew she was going to have to be
more resourceful. With the sun moving across the sky
toward sunset, she opened her daypack to see what she
had to work with. A cell phone, of course, but there was
no reception in the area. Flashlight, protein bar, whistle,
extra sweater, bandages, aspirin, burn cream, space
blanket, peanuts, water bottle, matches, pocket knife.
She ate some peanuts and took a couple of aspirin with
a swig of water from her canteen, hoping they would
relieve the pain in her knee.
