I don't get any of this," he said
Mrs. Wilkie knelt beside his desk and began to help him. They had just finished the first problem when
they heard a knock on the classroom door Mr. Jones, the teacher from across the hall, poked his head
inside the doorway "Mrs. Wilkie, may I speak with you in the hallway for a moment?"
She turned to her students "Keep working on your assignment while I'm speaking with Mr. Jones"
As soon as Mrs. Wilkie left the room, Roman leaned across the aisle and whispered to Sara. Mrs. Wilkie
told me to look at your work and try to figure out what I'm doing wrong. Can you hand me your paper?"
Sara proudly handed her assignment to Roman. She was flattered that Mrs. Wilkie had picked her work
as a model to help Roman.

The Math Assignment
Roman plunked his pencil on his desk and began to rub his eyes with the heels of his hands. It will take
me forever to finish this math assignment/he thought to himself These problems are impossible. How am I
supposed to know whether two miles is longer than 2500 yards? And who cares, anyway?
Mrs. Wilkie noticed Roman's frustration and walked over to his desk. "Do you have a question?"
Blake turned around and stared at Roman in disbelief. "I never heard Mrs. Wilkie tell you that."
Roman glared at Blake "you didn't hear it because she wasn't talking to you. She was talking to me. Why
don't you just mind your own business?"
Roman quickly copied all of Sarah's work onto his paper.
"Copying her work isn't going to help you learn how to do this," Blake muttered under his breath
When Mrs. Wilkie returned, she walked toward Roman's desk. He stopped her by saying, "I figured it
out, Mrs. Wilkie. Sara helped me."
