A water balance model for the Oredigger Mine found that during periods of high precipitation, discharge of a 10mg/L copper solution at a rate of 36 m³/hr may be required. Discharge from the mine will mix with water in the nearby quebrada (i.e., gully). During peak precipitation periods, the upstream flowrate of the quebrada is 7200 m³/hr and the copper concentration is 0.01mg/L. The copper loading in the quebrada remain below 10 kg/d/Under these conditions, will water treatment for copper be necessary? If so, what percentage of the copper must be removed from the mine discharge?
