Chapter 3: Consciousness and the Two-Track Mind
Points Possible: 50
Goal of assignment: Familiarize students with individual sleep patterns and correlation to sleep stages. The assignment provides an opportunity to apply practical learning
to complex concepts in sleep stages and dreams.
Directions: Students will track their sleep patterns for five consecutive days. Each student should keep a sleep chart. It will include hours of sleep per day/night
including naps, rating of sleep each night, as well as documentation of dreams. You will not submit the sleep chart, however, use of the chart will assist you as
you write your paper.

Each student will be required to submit a summary paper of at least 2 pages (12 point font, double spaced), of what they learned from their sleep
tracking, and how their amount of sleep affected their daily functioning. The paper should utilize the terminology from the chapter to relate to your
personal sleep tracking. This may include anticipating the type of sleep cycles you experienced, and relating the daily changes and/or consistencies in your own
circadian rhythm, Summarize your hours of sleep and connect to typical patterns and sleep facts discussed in chapter 3. Please include your name, the course name, and
the date at the top of the summary paper. Your sleep paper should not just be a narrative of your sleep tracking, the more ties to the chapter concepts, the better.
Grammar is important in submitting a good assignment. It is always a good idea to have someone read your paper and provide you feedback before submitting your final
paper.
Remember not to plagiarize. If you are using information that is from a source, even if that source is your textbook, you need to cite the source in your paper using APA
style. Citations should be used both in text, and in a reference list.

Grammar/Format: 15 Points - Final paper should be error free, and use proper APA citations.
Summary/Chapter Content: 35 points - You should include facts related to the chapter, sleep cycle, REM, NREM, dreams and how they relate to your sleep stages, circadian rhythms and how they
correlated with your week of sleep tracking.
