DOL Changes in Agricultu
The hatred and fear of immigrants and immigration during the Industrial Revolution was known
as nativism. Nativism arose out of the tensions between native-bom Americans and newly
arrived immigrants. Competition over jobs and a fear of the unknown shaped nativists' views.
Opponents of immigration restriction were the owners of factories who relied heavily on low-
wage immigrant labor. Finally, the immigrants who already had settled in the U.S. were opposed
to restricting immigration.
