Etruscan was a language of central Italy, spoken over 2,000 years ago by the Etruscan civilization, which ruled Rome before the rise of the roman Republic (which spoke Latin). Although there are a few words of Etruscan origin borrowed into Latin (such as persona, probably from Etruscan phersu 'mask'), Etruscan is entirely unrelated to Latin, and there is no evidence that Etruscan is part of any language family.
