Rosa Parks Refuses
On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks boarded a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. All buses in
Montgomery were segregated then, and black riders could ride only in the rear of the bus.
When Parks, who was already seated in the back, was told by the bus driver to give up her seat
to a white man, she refused. At six o'clock that night she was arrested and jailed. The outraged
black community organized a boycott of the city buses, which lasted for more than a year. The
case eventually went to the U.S. Supreme Court, which upheld a lower court's order to
