At my first command while I was in the Navy; I had a strong LPO that was stern but very involved in all his junior sailor's success. He had high expectations and no tolerance for laziness. However, the way he structured his leadership style every sailor up for advancement did score in the top five percent in their advancement exams. I would classify his leadership approach as mainly charismatic and transformational. He was not very concerned with the immediate emotional needs of the individuals. Therefore, I think transactional would not be an appropriate explanation for his personal leadership style. I think that transactional leadership can be appropriate in certain situations.
