I believe Stella Liebeck did deserve the punitive damages award and compensatory damages the jury rewarded her. Before it came to the jury, Stella tried to settle multiple times. McDonald's had the photos of what the coffee had done to Stella, I'm sure they also had the medical bills as well. Clearly Ms. Liebeck wasn't in it for the money if she told McDonald's all she wanted was for McDonald's to pay for her medical bills. Her medical bills were over $10,000. McDonald's could have easily paid that quietly. Instead, they sent an offer back of $800 which is ridiculous compared to the amount of money McDonald's makes on any given day.
