A 43-year-old woman with a history of "relapsing-remitting" pattern of numbness in her hands and legs was seen by a neurologist, who also noted that her speech was a little unclear with imprecise articulation subsequent to the numbness in her facial muscles. She was referred for an SLP consultation regarding a plan of action for the impact of her numbness on speech intelligibility. The attending SLP looked at the attached FLAIR MRI, which showed large and multiple hyperintense lesions clustered perpendicular to the ventricles. The SLP remembered from her neuro class that this type of diffuse periventricular plaques in the white mater typify an autoimmune-mediated demyelinating disease, but she could not think of its name. See if you can help in recalling this condition:
a. Multiple sclerosis
b. Guillain-Barré syndrome
c. Myasthenia gravis
d. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
