Malik Katahri is the office manager for BWW Medical Associates, PC. The number of patients the office sees is growing at an amazing rate and although good for the practice, it is taxing the current alphabetic filing system. Malik and the office staff have been discussing the pros and cons of converting to a numeric filing system or possibly doing away with paper records totally and moving toward a more progressive EHR program. The physicians are reluctant to commit to an EHR program related to the financial outlay and staff training time required. Discussion Questions: 1) What are some of the advantages of changing the filing system from an alphabetic system to a numeric system? 2) Would there be any advantages to staying with the current system? Explain. 3) How might you convince the physicians that electronic records would solve the filing “dilemma,” making the financial outlay worthwhile? (Using information from the Electronic Health Records chapter may be helpful when answering this question.)
