BIOL 241, Tissues Lab, Epithelial Tissues Name:_____________________________________
This handout should serve to clarify what types of epithelia to look at and what to label in your sketches. You should label the
important features of your sketches! You will also want to indicate the TYPE of epithelia. Questions for most tissue types are
included to help you round out your knowledge and provide you with a quick study guide.
A. Epithelial Tissues
1. Look at and sketch simple squamous epithelium
A. Label: cell, nuclei, plasma membrane
B. Does the slide tell you which organ/structure this tissue is from? _____________________________
C. What are the functions of simple squamous epithelium? _____________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
2. Look at and sketch simple cuboidal epithelium (x-2A or B)
A. Label: cell, nucleus, plasma membrane.
B. Label: apical and basal region of one cuboidal cell.
C. Does the slide tell you which organ/structure this tissue is from? _____________________________
D. What are the functions of simple cuboidal epithelium? _____________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________
E. Where is simple cuboidal epithelium found? ____________________________________________

3. Look at and sketch simple columnar epithelium with goblet cells. This tissue is often found in the intestinal wall. The
epithelium here is highly folded, or has ridges. This tissue also has numerous glands (that typically stain a different color
than the columnar cells). Goblet cells are found scattered among the epithelial lining of the intestines.
A. Label: the lumen of the intestine, a simple columnar epithelial cell, a goblet cell/mucous cell, and the basement
membrane.
B. Label: the apical and basal surfaces of a single columnar cell.
C. What are the functions of simple columnar epithelium? _____________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________
D. Where is simple columnar epithelium found in the body? _______________________________________
B. Epithelial Tissues with ‘funky’ arrangements.
1. Look at and sketch pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium. One location his epithelium is found in lining much
of the upper respiratory tract.
A. Label: the lumen, the basement membrane, & indicate where you see cilia.
B. Do all of these columnar cells touch the basement membrane? ________________________________
C. What are the functions of pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium? ________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________
D. Where in the body is pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium found?
________________________________________________________________________________

2. Look at and sketch transitional epithelium.
A. Label: Cell, lumen, basement membrane.
A. Do all of these cells touch the basement membrane? _______________________________________________
B. If the epithelium is distended (organ is full of urine), what is the appearance of the apical cells? What do the cells
look like if the epithelium is not distended?
______________________________________________________________________________________
C. Where would you find transitional epithelium in the body? __________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________________
C. Stratified epithelium.
1. Look at and sketch stratified squamous epithelium.
A. Label: 1) the region of the ‘strata’ (stack) where you would expect to find cells undergoing mitosis, 2) the region
of the ‘strata’ where you would be likely to find dead cells, 3) the basement membrane, and 4) indicate where the
underlying connective tissue is.
B. What are the functions of stratified squamous epithelium? ___________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
D. What are the two types of stratified squamous epithelium? ___________________________________________
C. Where would you find each type? Of stratified squamous epithelium in the body?
