There are many reasons why people wear makeup. There isn’t just one reason that applies to everyone and not all reasons will be covered. These are just some of the ones that I have come up with from personal experience.
I guess the first one, and potentially the main one, is to feel confident. We see makeup as covering up any flaws that we don’t want people to see and maybe making us more beautiful and physically appealing than we already are. It is designed to ideally draw people away from that zit on your chin or those blotchy red patches and instead make them look at your bright red lips and smoky eye, all alongside a beautiful even complexion. There’s nothing wrong with that. I don’t want to discourage you from trying makeup because whatever reason you apply it for is valid.
Makeup could be claimed as an art. Not everyone can paint like Vincent Van Gogh or take photographs like Ansel Adams or even write like J.K. Rowling. However, there are other art forms to explore and makeup is one of them. There are different levels of artistic ability when it comes to makeup in terms of how bold you go and it does take a level of skill buy everyone is capable of trying it. I can’t draw or paint or be artistic in that sense but makeup is so varied to each individual and that is what makes it an art.
Finally a third reason, which is actually really sad when you think about it, is that it appears to be generally expected of us. In every magazine, in every photo, the women are generally wearing makeup. It may be subtle but it’s still there and teenage girls in particular are spoon fed the idea that you can only be 100% pretty if you’re wearing makeup. It becomes one big scandal and a massive magazine story if a celebrity like Kylie Jenner or Adele is caught out and about not wearing makeup. God Forbid they should go outside looking like this or that.
But the truth is you don’t have to wear makeup to be beautiful. You are beautiful just the way you are.
Not only that, but you shouldn’t be made to feel ashamed for your choices. If you want to wear a full face of makeup everyday, dressed up to the nines with the smokiest eyes and the brightest lips then you do that. By the same token, if you want to go out wearing no makeup at all then that is also fine. You just do what makes you happy.
Whatever reason you identify with or why ever you choose to wear makeup, that choice is valid. You are free to do with your face as you please and you shouldn’t be under any pressure to wear or not wear makeup.
