Oil of specific gravity 0.85 flows upwards through a vertical venturimeter fitted in a 225mm diameter pipeline. The diameter of the throat is 75mm and the throat is 150mm above the inlet. Pressure connections are taken from the inlet and throat of the meter to the lower and upper ends of a vertical cylinder in which a piston with an area of 1950mm² is free to move. A load can be applied to the piston by placing weights on a piston rod passing through the bottom of the cylinder.
a) Draw the layout of the venturimeter
b) Calculate the discharge through the meter if a total load of 13.65kg including the piston, is required to maintain the piston in equilibrium. Neglect friction losses in converging section of the meter, cross sectional area of the piston and the rod
