Use these methods for contextualization to understand better why McCarthy did what he did and why he got the level of support he did in the country at that time. Your job at the end will be to write the contextualizing introduction to an LEQ on McCarthyism.

First, fill in surrounding facts in two ways. Review what you have learned about McCarthyism in lesson 7.5. Then read this file on the early days of McCarthyism to get more of the details. As you read through these sources, try to get a stronger handle on the range of opinions toward McCarthy at the time. You can also attempt to empathize with McCarthy and his supporters and detractors. What were they thinking at the time? Finally, keep the “Golden Rule of Historical Judgment” in mind as you render your verdicts.

Suppose you were writing an LEQ on the consequences of McCarthyism. Your thesis is something to the effect of, “As it turned out, the influence and support Senator McCarthy had in the country greatly affected American society and politics for the rest of the Cold War.” For this assignment, write the contextualizing introductory paragraph leading up to this thesis. In about three to six sentences, using specific and relevant historical facts, account for what McCarthy did and why he got the support he did.
