During sexual activity between two individuals, human sperm are ejaculated or released into the vagina, where they quickly contact cervical mucus and further enter the cervix in a bid to avoid contact with vaginal acid and other obstacles they may face within the female reproductive system.
Millions of human sperm cells enter the vagina but only a few ones gain access into the Fallopian tubes, and remarkably, only one sperm is able to fertilize the egg which results to the reproduction of a new individual. These obstacles are described by the scientists as a molecular screening process that only few sperm can overcome. For a sperm cell to be allowed through, it is guided by some chemical and temperature signals.
It is worthy to note that, there is evidence of storage of sperm in the Fallopian tubes, where there is a binding of the sperm to the epithelial lining of the tubes, which tends to reduce the chance of fertilization by countable sperm.
