The arguments of the social Darwinists certainly had some inherent truth given that the people that rose to the top were very talented. However, it under looked the prevailing external circumstances which also affected the chances of an individual to prosper. Segregation and the discrimination of the African Americans is an example.
Social Darwinism led to discrimination in the society on the basis of wealth, power, race and many more factors.

This theory believed in survival of the fittest concept, the idea is people become powerful in the society because they are inherently better.
Social Darwinism has been used to justify many injustices in the name of racism, social inequality, imperialism and many others over the past centuries. This kind of discrimination affected the chance of individuals to prosper.
For example: segregation and racial discrimination against the African Americans, right to equality in the USA passed by Congress, 1869, and ratified 1870, the 15th Amendment granted African American men the right to vote.
Therefore, it can be said that Social Darwinist can be used to describe success or failures of individuals in the society.
