calcium ions bind to troponin-tropomyosin molecules located on the grooves of the actin filaments. upon binding with calcium ions, troponin changes shapes and moves tropomyosin out of the groove which the tropomyosin normally blocks the actin myosin binding points. This facilitates creation of the myosin-actin crossbridges which are the basis of contraction of muscles.
