A dolly would use rolling friction, while sliding it would create static friction. Rolling friction would be one of the weakest forms of friction. As it tends to roll it causes there to be little to almost no heat. Meanwhile static friction is the strongest form of fiction. Moving a heavy box causes there to be heat between the box and the ground.
