Charlemagne was wanting to link the Palatine Chapel in Aachen, Germany back to the legacies of Rome. He emulated Byzantine construction with the layout of the chapel. He chose Aachen, due to an important and popular Roman Bath that was there. He built on top of it. The Chapel is a new take on the Basilica of San Vitale Ravenna. He kept the circular shape as a nod to the Roman roots.
