Patrons played a very large and important role in renaissance art and literature because they would provide the necessary funding and support for the artists to work and therefore survive.
The word patrons refers to that person who, because they have sufficient economic resources, takes an artist or scientist under their protection to enable them to carry out their work and benefit from it in a more or less direct way. The patronage is then the establishment of this bond that could, in certain aspects, be compared with the relationship of vassalage that existed in the Middle Ages. Thanks to the action and financial contribution of the patrons, the Renaissance was transformed into a period of high artistic and cultural growth; these patrons solicited and paid the artists, allowing them then to gain a minimum income and thus succeed in the art world. Among the most important patrons we must mention without a doubt the Medici, an important and famous family from Florence.
