To push for expanded voting rights for African Americans
Freedom Summer was also known as the Mississippi Summer Project. It occurred in the summer of 1964, aimed at getting more black Americans in Mississippi registered to vote. Civil rights organizations such as the Congress on Racial Equality (CORE) and the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) were sponsors of the voter registration drive.
