What does the chain represent in this excerpt from chapter 1 of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens?


“You are fettered,” said Scrooge, trembling. “Tell me why?”



“I wear the chain I forged in life,” replied the Ghost. “I made it link by link, and yard by yard; I girded it on of my own free will, and of my own free will I wore it. Is its pattern strange to you?”

The Ghost supports this claim by stating, "I girded it on of my own free will, and of my own free will I wore it." To put it simply, the Ghost had the choice to wear the chains, and he did just that. He had the power to not do so, but did it anyways.
