The Berlin Wall was a guarded barrier made of concrete which divided Berlin from 1961 to 1989. The Wall symbolized the lack of freedom under Communist oppression as it divided the communist Soviet bloc and the western democratic capitalist bloc. The Berlin Wall included guard towers which prevented people for crossing it. Although the East Germans established Eastern Bloc emigration restrictions from East Berlin into West Berlin, a lot of people died on their attempt to escape over it.
