So let’s say you want to add 1/4 and 3/7
What you do is you find the least common multiple of both of the denominators (4 and 7 and do the answer would be 28)
28 would be the new denominator
Since you multiplied 4 seven times to get the new denominator, you would multiply the top number by four to get 4/28 so that would be one new fraction
Since you multiplied 7 fours times to get 28, you would multiply the top number by 4 to get 12 and do the other new fraction would be 12/28
So you would then get 4/28+12/28 and then add the top numbers but not the bottom numbers to get 16/28. Then simplify, since both are multiplied by four you can get 1/7 because 16/4=1 and 28/4=7. Does that help?

First, you need to make sure that the denominators are equal. You must have equal denominators to add fractions.

Next, add the numerators together. The numerator is the top number of the fraction and this is added when the denominators are equal. Do not add the denominators together leave them alone!

Finally, add up the numerators and get your sum.
