Interest in trade and travel in Medieval Europe was revived by the "Crusades," since although these also led to a great deal of violence, there was an uncharacteristic exchange of culture.
The Crusades exposed Europeans to other people and ideas. By traveling to other lands, the Western Europeans had developed desires for contact with the larger world.
