I understand "areas" here to be areas of culture or science - not geographic areas of the US (since all US areas experienced inequality).
1) Education: for a long time there was a separation of both genders and skin colours in education, with white men having access to the best quality education
2) Personal Freedom: during slavery there was an inequality in the area of personal freedom.
