US citizens pay federal taxes through income taxes being withheld from their pay checks.
The Sixteenth Amendment passed during the Progressive Era allowed the federal government to collect federal taxes from income. Each person then files a federal tax form at the end of a year. Declaring your income, puts you in an income bracket and if you have not had enough money withdrawn from your paycheck then you owe the government more money. If you have paid in too much, then the government owes you a refund.
American citizens must pay federal taxes which are paid via income taxes.
