is a functional unit that results from interactions of abiotic, biotic, and anthropogenic components and are a combination of interacting, interrelating parts that form a unitary whole.  Ecosystems vary in size.  They can be as small as a puddle, or as large as the earth itself.  Basically, any living and non-living things interacting together can be considered an ecosystem.  Within each ecosystem, there are habitats that vary in size.  A habitat is a place where a population lives.  A population is a group of living organisms of the same kind living in the same place at the same time.  Natural ecosystems are made up of abiotic factors such as air, water, rocks, and energy and biotic factors such as plants, animals, and microorganisms.

Global systems interact in a variety of ways to affect ecosystems. Global financial, economic, and cultural systems may require the continued destructions of ecosystems to sustain themselves, whereas political and legal systems may push for the renewal and conservation of certain ecosystems.

It is no secret that the way of life in the modern world has a profound impact on many ecosystems around the world. Some are changing and some are disappearing in direct response to our global systems and the way they interact together. Some driving causes of ecosystem destruction are

  • Deforestation
  • Climate change
  • Pollution

All of these are a direct consequence of our global political, economic, and cultural systems. The legal and political systems often interact with these in an effort to limit the damage and conserve various ecosystems.

Cultural, financial, and economic systems interact by the law of supply and demand. The cultural global system we have established demands certain common goods like

  • Paper
  • Phones
  • Rubber

and much more.

The global financial and economic systems between countries fill this demand by collecting the raw materials needed to make these goods. In the case of paper, it leads to massive widespread deforestation all over the world, decimating ecosystems and endangering entire species. Phones and rubber leak harmful toxic substances when disposed of, that are absorbed by soil and may contaminate water supplies, harming these ecosystems, the fabrication of all of these pollutes the earth as well. affecting artic, caves, coral reefs, and many other ecosystems around the world.
