The heirs to the Roman ideal – Saxons, Danes, Normans, Plantagenets, Tudors, Georgians and Victorians – all of witch came after, tried to establish Britain as part of a wider empire, drawing on the example set by the Romans.

Britain lacked modernity and civilization before the Roman invasion. The Romans improved hygiene, provided a system of clean drinking water, and introduced democratic norms.
In addition, the Romans were responsible for the modern legal system that Britain operates till today. They also built infrastructure, introduced the construction of modern roads, heating systems, the use of concrete in construction, among others.
