Ionic compounds are those that are formed from positive and negative ions. Negative ions like to gain electrons and positive ions like to give away ions. One common example of this is NaCl which is table salt made from 1 Na+ ion and 1 Cl- ion. Sodium donates its one valence electron to chlorine to form Sodium Chloride.
