Deviant behavior is relative; that is, it becomes deviant when it is socially defined as such.  it is deviant within a particular social context.

Deviance are clearly defined by the social context and so it may be said that deviance is socially created as in crime is socially created.

Chambliss Study

William J. Chambliss was a famous sociologist and a criminologist from America. He gave the famous Chambliss theory.

His study stated that conflicts between the different social classes are considered as the fundamental force in the capitalist societies.

From Chambliss theory, he conveyed that our society determines or labels one by his or her class background.

Deviance

  • Deviance is defined as any such behavior which violates the social norms.
  • Deviance are mainly social constructs which varies according to the structure of the society.

Thus we can say that deviance is socially created as the behavior or act of ones violated the social norms and the enacted rules of the society.
