A population can be defined as the total number of living organisms such as animals, plants and human beings that are living together in a geographical region or location, at a particular period of time.

Basically, the four (4) main characteristics of a population include the following:

  • Mortality (death) rate: it is the number of deaths per unit time by each individual that makes up a population.
  • Natality (birth) rate: it is the rate of reproduction or birth per unit time by each individual that makes up a population.
  • Population density (size): this is the size of any population with respect to some unit of space in a geographical region.
  • Age distribution (structure): this describes the age groups that exist within a population and it is determined by growth rate.
