In the Gift Of the Magi, written by O. Henry, where Christmas Eve has come. Married couple Jim and Della reside in a modestly equipped apartment in New York. They don't have much money. Della is angry when the narrative begins since she only has $1.87 to spend on a Christmas present for her husband.
The narrator informs us that the married pair each has a prized property. Jim is wearing a gold watch that belonged to his grandfather and father before that. Della loves to show off her gorgeous hair.
Della visits a woman who sells hair accessories. This lady agrees to purchase Della's hair for $20. Della proceeds to get a platinum fob chain for Jim's gold watch with the newly found cash.
She spends twenty one dollars on this, leaving her with only eighty seven cents worldwide. When she arrives home, she starts curling her hair to make what's left of it appear acceptable.
Jim is shocked by his wife's behavior when he arrives home, but after hearing her explanation of why she had her hair cut off, he hugs her and gives her the gift he had purchased for her: two jeweled tortoiseshell combs that she had long admired in a store window.
Although she couldn't use the combs until her hair grows back, at least she can give Jim his present.
In a final twist, Jim reveals to Della that he had to sell his gold watch in order to pay for the pricey combs he had purchased for her. He now has a platinum fob chain for a gold watch he no longer owns, while she has two combs but no hair to use them on.
