There was a general tradition for the veneration of icons in Christianity. However, this practice became controversial in the eighth century Byzantine Empire. There was division in the Christian society over the destruction of holy images of Jesus and Mary. One group claimed it to be forbidden by holy law while others supported it who see them as protective.
