From the equation of the line:-

Convert the line to the slope/intercept form

y = mx + b

m = slope  so this value will tell you what you want to know.

For example  y = x - 3 has a slope of 1

and y = 0.5x + 2 has a slope of less than 1.

You can determine by observing how the line slants on a graph, and also by using the slope formula given as [tex]slope (m) = \frac{rise}{run} = \frac{y_2 - y_1}{x_2 - x_1}[/tex]

You can determine whether a slope of a line by observing the line on the graph as follows:

  • If the line slants upwards from your left to the right (rising slope) the slope value would be greater than 1.
  • If the line slants downwards from your right to the left (declining slope), the slope value would be less than 1.
  • If the rate at which the y-values changes is same as the rate at which the x-values are changes, the slope would be equal to 1.

The slope of a line that passes through two points on a coordinate plane is the change in y over change in x.

Slope (m) can be calculated using the formula below:

[tex]slope (m) = \frac{rise}{run} = \frac{y_2 - y_1}{x_2 - x_1}[/tex]

See diagram below to showing the rise and run of a slope.
