A chemical formula is a way of presenting information about the chemical proportions of atoms that constitute a particular chemical compound or molecule, using chemical element symbols, numbers, and sometimes also other symbols, such as parentheses, dashes, brackets, commas and plus and minus signs.
The chemical formula identifies each constituent element by a chemical symbol and indicates the proportional number of atoms of each element. In the empirical formula, these ratios start with the key element and assign the number of atoms of the other elements in the compound to the key element.
Divide the molar mass of the compound by the mass of the molecular formula. The result should be an integer or very close to an integer. Multiply all subscripts in the molecular formula by the integer found in step 2. The result is a total formula.
Molecular formulas use chemical symbols and indexes to specify the exact number of different atoms in a molecule or compound. The empirical formula shows the simplest integer ratio of atoms in a compound. The structural formula shows the bond arrangement of atoms in the molecule.
