The plates sit above the ‘plastic’ mantle and move due to the convection currents in the underlying mantle. There are approximately 7 major tectonic plates of the lithosphere. Where some of these plates collide is called a convergence/ destructive boundary while where they move away from each other is called a divergent/constructive boundary.
