Density independent factors can affect a population no matter what it's density is. For example: natural disasters, temperature, sunlight, human activities, physical characteristics and behaviours of organisms affect any and all populations regardless of their densities.
The factors affecting population growth, also known as limiting factors, are those factors that keep the population from growing unlimitedly. In other words, limiting factors prevent populations from reaching their biotic potentials.
Population limiting factors are of 2 types:
- Density-dependent
- Density-independent
Density-dependent factors are those that impact species in a population differently based on their densities. In other words, the factors are species-specific. Examples include food, predator, and diseases.
Density-independent factors are not species-specific. they act on the population as a whole irrespective of the density. Examples include natural phenomena events such as wildfires, flooding, etc.
