How did the election of Rutherford B. Hayes to the presidency impact African Americans in the South?

Respuesta :

The election of Rutherford B. Hayes to the presidency on 1876 brought the end of the Reconstruction and therefore, several negative effects to the African Americans of the South.

After Reconstruction troops were withdrawn from the South, African Americans started to be harassed, threatened and killed by groups of white people who were against them. Also, segregation was legalized and their right to vote was denied with different methods.

Answer:

Hayes election lead to the end of the Reconstruction ear.

Explanation:

The Reconstruction Era refers to the 12 year time period after the Civil War in which the US focused on rebuilding. During this time, the US Congress passed several new laws in order to protect newly freed African American citizens. This included giving them citizenship rights, the right to vote (for men), etc. However, these successes in terms of gaining equal rights for African Americans would not last long.

This is due to the election of Rutherford B Hayes. Thanks to a deal between Northern and Southern politicians, Southerners agreed that they would make Hayes president since no candidate won enough electoral college votes to win outright. In return, the Northern politicians agreed to remove federal troops from the South. This allowed for the development of Jim Crow laws and segregated facilities for white and black citizens.
