Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan after getting financial help from Spain set out to find a new route (western route) to find Spice Islands. On his way, he found a bay which led him to a strait, later came to be called as the Strait of Magellan. Magellan became the first explorer to cross the Pacific Ocean. The Strait of Magellan considered being the fastest and safest route that connected the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans until the Panama Canal opened.
