The states that seceded from the Union before the Battle of Fort Sumter, which took place on April 12, 1861, at Charleston, South Carolina, and which ignited the American CivIl War, were South Carolina (December 1860), Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana (all five in January 1861) and Texas (February 1861).
The other four states that did not secede from the Union until after the above mentioned Battle of Fort Sumter were Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina and Tennessee.
