President Washington consulted the Senate for economic advice and policies in his first years in office. He required the help of subordinates to seek his approval for their actions and accepted personal responsibility for their conduct. Washington’s elected a cabinet which had four original members: Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of Treasury Alexander Hamilton, Secretary of War Henry Knox, and Attorney General Edmund Randolph. Washington established the cabinet as the chief executive’s private, trusted advisors.
