Cartoonist Scott Adams, author of the Dilbert comic, writes of "cubicle cities," large areas with innumerable employees packed into individual workspaces separated by partial walls. In this workplace design, density is increased. He writes in a satirical, often sarcastic, way about the social and psychological landscape of workers (white-collar) in modern business corporations. The Dilbert series came to national prominence through the downsizing period in 1990s America and was then distributed worldwide.
Dilbert is the main character in the strip (a stereotypical technically-minded single male). He is a skilled engineer but has a poor social and romantic life.
