Divergent boundaries are when tectonic plates naturally pull apart. When this happens, they create energy that's released in the form of seismic waves. These waves create movement in the rocky portion, causing an earthquake. Divergent boundaries can also cause the formation of volcanoes. For volcanoes, when tectonic plates pull apart, magma from within Earth's mantle rises to the surface, and may erupt as lava. The tectonic plates are located around the coasts of countries on the Pacific Ocean.
